Natural Hair DIY Shealoe

by Jenelle on September 4, 2013

Shea butter is a staple product to many naturals.  It’s one of the first butters I was introduced to.  Another popular item is aloe vera gel, which is extremely moisturizing to natural hair.  Now, many people will mix oil with their shea butter to make it easier to apply.  But, what happens if you mix in some aloe vera gel?

You get shealoe!  Shealoe is a great styling product to use, especially for twists.  It’s also good to use for sealing your ends.  And, don’t think shealoe is limited to just your hair.  You can use shealoe on your skin too.  Just think how well it can seal in moisture, especially when you first get out of the shower!  Nothing like a multipurpose product!

So, let’s get on with the recipe.  It’s really easy.

To make shealoe, you’ll need the following:

Shea butter (unrefined or yellow, it’s your choice)

Aloe vera gel

Oil of choice (I’m using coconut)

Bowl, hand mixer, and measuring tools

I took about a ½ cup of shea butter and put it into my bowl.  Using the hand mixer, I beat the butter until it was fluffy.  Then, I added in about ¼ cup of aloe vera gel and 2 tablespoons of coconut oil.  Mixed it until it was smooth and put it into a jar.

Now, to keep this from molding, you can opt to add in a preservative.  I keep mine in the fridge until ready to use, which I then take out and let it get to room temperature.

Have you ever made shealoe?  If so, how do you use it?

Let me know!
